PROBLEM
How might we make a banking app engaging for younger users by integrating social features, while ensuring security, privacy, and clarity for all users?
OUTCOME
A mobile prototype featuring a social-enabled dashboard, bill-splitting flow, and activity feed. The design encourages interaction (emoji reactions, shared savings pots) while keeping financial tasks simple.
This concept demonstrates how social elements can increase engagement without diluting core banking functionality.

& Insights
For this concept project, the challenge was to design a mobile banking app with all the core financial features users expect, but with a social layer that appeals to Gen Z and Millennials while remaining accessible to all age groups. The aim was to create an experience that blends money management with shared financial goals, challenges, and conversations
01
Competitor Analysis
I conducted a competitor analysis of Monzo, Starling Bank, and Revolut to explore their approaches to social features, financial tracking, and shared saving experiences.
Key insight: While all three offer robust financial tools, only Monzo and Revolut have lightweight social features, and none provide a fully integrated social banking experience combining chat, challenges, and shared goals in one place.
02
Red Route Analysis
I conducted a Red Route Analysis to identify the most essential core banking and social features for a digital banking app.
Key insight: Users prioritised core tasks like account overview, money transfers, and transaction history over social features, highlighting the need for social elements to complement rather than compete with essential banking functions.
03
Interviews
I conducted 9 semi-structured interviews with a mix of digital banking users, including Monzo, Starling, and Revolut customers. The goal was to understand how they use core banking features, engage with social elements, and perceive the value of collaborative saving tools.
